Outstanding American paint decorated and dated 1838 “Friendship” box. We believe the four ladies pictured in the corners are the “friends” and the other 17 vignettes represent memories from a “Grand Tour” they took together to Europe and the Orient. The box was possibly used to store mementos such as tickets, menus, etc. from the trip.
The box is made of pine with square cut nails on top, dovetailed on the sides, with T-nails in the bottom. The date is painted on the back. The center medallion and the gold scrolls appear to be hand painted. The portraits and the vignettes are probably some form of transfer that has been hand colored. Excellent quality work and condition.
The box measures 18 3/4″ W x 11″ D x 3″H.
