A wonderfully created late 19th C. carved walnut box with a large Flying Eagle grasping the world globe (showing North and South America), strong relief carvings and great molded shapes on carved raised feet. The relief carved shield has the word “Mizpah”, which is an ancient reference to being “watched over and protected”. It is also a common Masonic and Biblical term with the same meaning.

A most interesting, if not unique, powder horn. The top is carved with a bear’s image. When you pull up the top of his head, there is a compartment for percussion caps. The top is spring loaded to hold its position. The pouring spout has a carved seal looking over the spout. The opening is activated by pushing in a brass button, also spring activated. Wood appears to be walnut with brass fasteners. Very nice wear and patina. Small old chip repair where open end attaches to horn. History of onwership and use in the Northern Maine and Canadian hunting and trapping trades, perhaps Hudson Bay.
